Laid-in is the original, and rare, Book League Review, that came with the book, and is virtually impossible to track down. Previous owner's name and date (June 18, 1943) neatly written on upper corner of FFEP. A touch of faint toning to endpapers (barely.) Manufacturer's rust color topstain is present and unblemished. Pages and endpapers are bright and clean. Additionally, the Book Club DJ has a War Bonds advert on rear flap, and retail DJ's do not, instead the top of the rear flap has the header "Psychothrillers." As for this copy, the book is bright, tight and clean. The difference of course is the Book Club Edition slug is on the bottom of the front flap, whereas the retail trade edition has a $2.50 price. First edition, first printing of the Book Club edition, in its original DJ that matches the desirable DJ (and artwork) of the very pricey, first trade edition.

A desirable vintage copy in its original, matching DJ. Often referred to as one of the best noir novels written featuring a femme fatale, its collectible nature continues to climb. Despite the chips, this remains a desirable DJ, thanks to the small print run of the trade edition, and the matching artwork of the trade edition. Slender, shallow chip on upper edge, and rubs at corner folds. The original, classic DJ has two open chips, one at crown, and one at heel.

Overall this is still a very decent copy of this hard to find first edition. This book was the basis for the award winning movie of the same name. There is some dirt and age toning present on both front and rear panels of the jacket which is now housed in a Brodart cover to prevent any further damage. Approximately 1/4 inch and the width of the spine at the top and approximately 1/2 inch and the width of the spine at the bottom. Jacket does show wear at the corners and there are pieces missing at both the top and bottom of the spine. Jacket is not price clipped and does bear a previous owner's name and salutation on the inside front panel. Boards are in very good shape only showing minor wear at the points and top and bottom of the spine. This copy is clean throughout but does show very minor age toning as is common with most older books published in England. Very good first British edition of this famous novel by Vera Caspary.
