Surprisingly it’s Jack Cantori who is the dark horse of the story who we are first introduced to as Edgar’s assistant but as the story picks up he becomes more and more prominent.ĭespite all the positive things I can say about this book I have some nitpicks about it like how some things regarding Elizabeth’s older sister Adriana were starting to sound creepy coming from Edgar’s thoughts especially since he has a teenage daughter himself. Elizabeth Eastlake, an ancient one who’s story is rooted firmly on Duma Key as well as her demise, it’s Eastlake’s story that echoes both Edgar and Wireman’s and ties all the events together. The bond between Edgar and Wireman is that between brothers and it carries a lot of depth to the story told through Edgar’s character while the Florida setting gives it color to an already interesting premise.

One character that I’m sure many people will love is Jerome Wireman, a lawyer and caretaker to Elizabeth Eastlake who’s still dealing with his own loses, something he and Edgar have in common and even has a little secret of his own. The story is about how Edgar deals with the trauma of his accident and the loss of his right arm, his recovery and the friendships he forged in Duma Key but it’s also about dark secrets that have been kept for years when most of the world has moved on and how his paintings connect to everything. To be honest when I started this book I felt like the story wasn’t going anywhere but just when I was ready to put it down in favor of another book I reached 100 pages in and I got addicted to it.

One day Edgar decides to move from Minnesota to Duma Key in Florida to continue his recovery, takes up painting as a hobby and as Edgar is slowly but surely recovering from the accident he soon discovers that the beauty that his paintings have also hold a terrible power, one that is in connection with the island itself. Duma Key is about a wealthy builder named Edgar Freemantle who gets into an accident that severs his right arm, gets divorced from his wife due to his behavior in its aftermath and enters rehabilitation. Before I read the book I came across a lot of comments from his long-time fans on how it’s one of Stephen King’s better novels in recent years and since it was also about someone who took up painting without knowing shit about it I decided to check it out for myself. This is only my third Stephen King novel and 2. There’s a few things I’d like to put out there about this book 1.
